OUR APPROACH
Learn to learn, learn to do, learn to be
At Acton, we use state-of-the-art learning software, real-world projects, Socratic discussions, and a Hero’s Journey dialogue in a learner-driven multi-age learning studio. Unlike traditional schools that give grades, Acton learners must master core subjects (100% = A+) and apply knowledge in real-life projects called Quests. Children aren’t tested in the traditional sense, instead they develop portfolios of their best work and display their achievements in public exhibitions. Do you remember learning about historical figures in school—perhaps the history of President Abraham Lincoln? Instead of just reading history Acton learners assume the shoes of President Lincoln and research, write, and deliver a speech on what leadership means to them.
We believe every child is a genius and is on their own hero’s journey. Just like epic heroes of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, and even modern day Disney’s Lion King and Rowling’s Harry Potter—Acton Academy learners are on their own hero’s journey to develop courage, grit, and character. They learn to learn, learn to do, and learn to be and along the way they build friendships, passion, and a life-long love for learning.
Inspired by the Montessori education method, entrepreneurialism, and the philosopher Socrates real life heroes Jeff and Laura Sandefer developed a revolutionary school called Acton Academy in Austin, Texas in 2009. This now decade proven school offers other like minded life-long learners to develop Acton schools in communities world-wide as Acton Academy affiliates. Acton Academy Oshkosh has joined this global community as an affiliate and will offer another option for Oshkosh area community families.
