A Year of Becoming
Do you remember walking across the rainbow? Every year, our community begins with the same simple ritual. Learners, parents, and Guides gather together and cross a rainbow walkway. Some children skip from color to color. Some carefully tiptoe. Some hesitate making their first step over the threshold while some parents linger before letting go of a hand that suddenly seems just a little bigger than it did the year before.
The ritual never changes but the people crossing it always do. At the time, it simply feels like the beginning of another school year. Looking back now, I think it is something much more. It is an invitation, an invitation to step into the unknown together, trusting that whatever occurs throughout the year will most certainly shape us in ways we cannot yet see.
This year, our community carried one question with us: What is the Hero’s Journey?
As I quietly sat in the back of the Discovery Studio this week listening to learners rehearse and evaluate their Hero Speeches, I realized I wasn’t simply hearing speeches, I was hearing different answers to ˆWhat is the Hero’s Journey?’
“I learned it’s okay to ask for help.” “My motto is, ‘If you don’t have time for a break, you need a break.’” “My friends helped me realize I wasn’t alone.” “When you lose your motivation, remember your why.”
Every learner discovered something different because every learner lived a different story. One learner bravely stood and shared a personal speech. She spoke about arriving at Acton feeling just as excited and nervous as she had on her very first day. She shared simply “I love my school.” When the votes were counted, her peers decided her speech wasn’t quite ready for the Hero’s Ceremony. Learners held the standard of excellence and they applauded her bravery. As I watched that moment unfold, I found myself thinking that belonging and excellence don’t compete, they grow together.
It is nearly impossible to walk through an Acton year unchanged. I’ve watched children become more courageous. I’ve watched friendships become anchors. I’ve watched parents loosen their grip just enough for their children to discover their own strength. I’ve watched families celebrate growth that couldn’t be measured by a test but could be seen in confidence, kindness, resilience, responsibility, and joy. I’ve watched Guides wrestle with hard questions, reflect honestly, celebrate one another, and continue practicing the very journey we ask of our learners every day.
Somewhere along the way I realized something about myself. This year reminded me that growth doesn’t always happen by adding more, sometimes it happens by making room. Room to notice, room to listen, room to slow down enough to truly see another person. I found myself protecting margin more carefully, not because less matters, because the right things deserve our full attention. I’ve learned that belonging rarely grows in hurried moments, instead it grows when we linger, when we ask one more question, when we stay curious a little longer, when we make room for one another. I think that lesson has changed me as a Director but even more importantly, it has changed me as a parent, a partner, a friend, and a fellow traveler.
Today, each learner received a character rock. One word, etched into stone. Not as a finish line, not as a label, but as a witness. A quiet reminder from a community of learners that knows them best: “We saw this grow in you.”
Perhaps we all need moments like this when someone pauses long enough to say “I see your courage…patience..who you are becoming.”
As this year’s chapter closes, I invite you to ask your child one question:
“What character quality do you think has grown most in me this year?”
Then be brave enough to simply listen. Share your own answer too. Ask your child what character quality they hope continues to grow in themselves. Then wonder together…Who do we hope to become next?
One year ago we stepped across the rainbow together. Today, even though we close one chapter the Hero’s Journey continues. Heroes are rarely formed alone. They are shaped by challenge, strengthened through community, and revealed over time.
Thank you for trusting us with your children, thank you for trusting one another. Thank you for choosing a journey that values courage over comfort, questions over easy answers, and the lifelong work of becoming. What a privilege it has been to walk beside you this year.
