Mr. Matthew, Adventure Guide

Mr. Matthew is driven by one powerful word: “Why?” A deep thinker with a love for philosophy, curiosity, and the Socratic method, Matthew believes meaningful learning begins with questions rather than answers. Acton learners quickly discovered that he is thoughtful, grounded, and deeply committed to helping them think critically and grow in independence, while also being a little quirky and a lot of fun.

Matthew is a creative who earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh and a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Instrumental Music Performance with a focus in trombone. Originally from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, he has spent more than a decade working with young people as a music teacher, mentor, and philosophical thinker, helping learners build confidence, discipline, and ownership of their learning. Primarily specializing with middle and high school learners, Matthew also serves in the 132D Army Band based in Madison, Wisconsin, a role he remains deeply committed to.

Matthew is thrilled to join the Acton Academy Oshkosh team as an Adventure Guide. He shared, “I am consistently blown away by the depth of maturity, curiosity, bravery, and resilience found in these learners. My goal is to encourage these traits, stay out of their way, and celebrate their imminent achievements!” With his deep curiosity for “why,” his philosophy of guiding while stepping back, and his excitement for the Hero’s Journey, Matthew is a natural fit for the Acton mindset.

Outside the studio, Matthew can often be found reading stacks of books—especially fantasy, science fiction, classic literature, psychology, history, and biographies. He also loves the perfect cup of tea or coffee, walks in nature, lifting weights, live music, martial arts, and yes—even video games.
